Welcome message

Dear Colleagues,

I wish you a warm welcome to the XIIIth Edition of the IASGO Symposium - Romanian Section, which will take place this year in Bucharest, between 25th and 28th of April, 2012.

The 2012 IASGO event participants will have the opportunity to attend lectures presented by more than 60 Romanian and foreign special guests, nationally and internationally renowned personalities.

Starting this year, the curricula for Hepato-Bilio-Pancreatic Surgery will change accordingly to the UEMS Section; therefore, the main topic of this year's edition will focus on Hepato-Bilio-Pancreatic Surgery.

The sessions from April 26th and 27th will debate topics related to benign and malignant pancreatic, bile ducts and liver pathology, including a session dedicated to liver transplantation. During these sessions, the focus will be on the chapters found in the new curricula of Hepato-Bilio-Pancreatic pathology, allowing to physicians interested in this area to understand better this kind of surgery and acquire up-to-date knowledge.

It is worth mentioning the participation to this event, of Professors Domenico Forti, Luciano De Carlis and Antonio Rampoldi, who have had an important contribution in the construction and development of liver transplant program in Fundeni Clinical Institute. Their presence sustains once more the high scientific level of this event.

In addition, a Pre-Symposium course on "Surgical Techniques used in Liver Resection" will be held on April 25th, giving the opportunity to the surgeons interested in this area to better understand the anatomy, pathology and surgical techniques in liver surgery.

Also, during the Symposium, there will be three sections concerning digestive oncology, one of them being devoted to neuroendocrine tumors, a pathology becoming more common in recent years and whose features are starting to be more obvious.

Last but not least, there will be a session dedicated to robotic surgery, which will present the modalities of performing various types of robotic surgery. This session will benefit of the presence of Professor Konstantinos Konstantinidis, one of the pioneers in this type of minimally invasive surgery, with whom we collaborated to launch the robotic surgery program in "Dan Setlacec" Center of General Surgery and Liver Transplantation from Fundeni Clinical Institute.

I take this opportunity to thank the sponsors for supporting the 2012 IASGO events and wish all participants to take full advantage of the interesting scientific program, in the pleasant ambient of the National Institute of Statistics.

Yours sincerely,

Irinel Popescu, MD, FACS, FEBS
